Within the last two weeks the world of bodybuilding and strength sports has been rattled multiply by the news of allegations of criminal behavior against well-known athletes: First, current Mr. Olympia Shawn Rhoden has been accused of rape and, as a consequence that played out in the aftermath of this event, excluded of this year’s and future Mr. Olympia shows by its organizers. Second, the fourfold winner of the men’s physique division Jeremy Buendia has been incriminated seriously of domestic violence toward his ex-girlfriend Hilda Laura Amaral just a few days ago. Now, it appears as if this dramatic series of public accusations continued with famous powerlifter and strongman Larry “Wheels” Williams who has been accused of mental and physical abuse too!
Larry’s ex-girlfriend Chilasa King published a YouTube video in which she claims to come clean with only the two biggest issues she had experienced in her five-year-long relationship with her ex-boyfriend Larry Wheels. According to her depiction, the strength athlete would have cheated on her multiple times with women as well as men, and he would have acted abusively:
“It took a lot of talking to professionals, and it took a lot of space from him to really understand what I had been dealing with in my relationship with him for years. And that is abuse, and I mean that’s abuse all across the board. Physical, mental, emotional, and narcissistic abuse with this person.”
In the roughly 17 minutes run time of the clip Chilasa claims, that the strength athlete from New York would have verbally abused her constantly with insults and derogatory comments on her muscular bodily appearance. This kind of body shaming would have been targeted at her self-esteem directly. But besides this and the acts of infidelity, the worst episode would have been the acts of physical violence which always would have been a reaction to the young woman’s demand for respect of her person.
Larry would have permanently intimidated her and suppressed her self-confidence. Upon 2016, when they would have moved to Los Angeles, Wheels’ behavior would have reached new heights of aggression: When King would have asked him once again, with whom Larry would intend to betray her that time around, he would have completely lost it and struck her with his fists. The strength athlete would have targeted her legs, ribs, arms, head and face. King goes on by playing a pretty disturbing voice recording of the most severe altercation they would have had at that time. One can hear Chilasa screaming in panic, telling a man whose voice sounds eerily similar to Wheels’ voice to get off of her, while he is shouting loudly and aggressively.
Since King never would have had experienced a similar situation before, she wouldn’t have known what to do. Therefore, she would have grabbed a kitchen knife and sat down in a corner to protect herself from him. The young woman emphasizes, that she wouldn’t have taken the knife to threat or attack Wheels: “I didn’t approach him, I didn’t lunge at him, I didn’t use it on him.” The 24-year-old then would have turned around the situation through calling the police and claiming that she would have threatened him with a knife, lying about the whole course of events. Chilasa never could have looked at Larry the same again after this manipulative move.
In the last part of the clip, the young fitness athlete asserts that she would have always wanted the best for Larry Wheels. She would have been with him since he was 19 years old, and she would have always supported him with regard to his sportive ambitions as well as his personal development. Chilasa would have loved him wholeheartedly for the five years she spent in a relationship with the powerlifter and strongman. And it would have taken her a lot of professional help to come to the point of disclosing this whole story publicly.
While we don’t know whether Chilasa’s claims are ultimately true, the recordings she’s playing in the video do actually appear very unsettling. And it can’t be denied that the man on the recordings actually sounds like Larry Wheels. Of course, we don’t have any knowledge about the circumstances but the statements from his ex-girlfriend yet. And as we know, context matters. That isn’t to say that Larry is innocent either, but the fact that the series of allegations which is currently turning the scene upside down is happening within a heartbeat, requires one to take a step back and look at the details carefully to avoid a rash and emotionally biased judgement.
